The mission of the Laboratory is to promote basic and applied research in Corporate Finance and Financial Markets, as well as to improve the education provided at undergraduate and postgraduate level of the relevant disciplines as they apply today in the light of Corporate Social Responsibility & Sustainability (CSR/ESG) concepts, while at the same time to disseminate this knowledge to the business community through collaborations with companies of the Private and Public Sector.
Dr. Dimitris Kyriazis (Director of the Lab) is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Banking and Financial Management, University of Piraeus (Greece). He teaches Financial Management, Corporate and Business Strategy to undergraduate courses and Mergers and Acquisitions to both undergraduate and post-graduate courses. He holds a PhD in Economics from the City University, London. The topic of his doctoral thesis was on Mergers and Acquisitions. Prior to his academic assignment in the University of Piraeus (2002), he has worked (1997-2001) for Alpha Bank in Athens getting involved among other matters in mergers and acquisitions projects. His research work is focused on the issues of mergers and acquisitions, hedge fund activism and corporate governance, information asymmetry, investment strategy and market efficiency. His work has been published in highly rated academic journals, such as the Strategic Management Journal, European Financial Management, Journal of Business Finance & Accounting and Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions and Money. He has presented his research in several international conferences and has been the referee in several academic journals, such as the International Review of Economics and Finance, Applied Economics, Applied Financial Economics και Journal of Economics and Finance. He is the author of a book entitled “Mergers & Acquisitions”, which was written in Greek and published in Athens (latest 3rd edition 2025). He has conducted training seminars for professionals in the banking sector. He has been the academic advisor for several years to the students’ team of the Department participating in the annual international competition “Research Challenge” of the CFA organisation in which the team of our department gained the winner status at a country level (years 2019, 2020 & 2024). Dr. Anna Constantatos is an Assistant Professor in the department of Accounting, Economics & Finance in the School of Business and Economics at Deree-The American College of Greece since 1997. She holds a BSc in Accounting and Finance from Deree-The American College of Greece, an MBA in Finance and Investments from the City University of New York (Baruch College) and a PhD in Accounting and Finance from the University of Stirling. Anna has been teaching courses various courses in the area of Accounting and Finance including Financial Accounting, Intermediate Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Principles of Finance, Financial Management and Corporate Governance & Accountability. Dr. Georgios Sainis is a faculty member, since 1991, of the School of Business and Economics in the American College of Greece-Accounting and Finance Dept. (Current position: Associate Professor). He received his B.Sc. in Business Administration from the American College of Greece, his M.A in Operations Management from the University of Kent at Canterbury (UK) and his Ph.D. from the University of Hertfordshire (K). He has a more than 15 years of experience as Business and Quality Assurance Consultant in SMEs. His research interests are in the fields of Financial Performance Valuation, in Mergers and Acquisitions as well as in Quality Management and Quality Assurance of Corporations. As researcher he has published a number of papers into peered reviewed journals like the TQM and Business Excellence Journal, the Competitiveness Review: An International Business Journal. Charalambos (Babis) Englezos Economist, Composer, Researcher. Founding member and President of the Hellenic Investors Association (SED), since 2000. He studied economics at the University of Piraeus and Music at the Piraeus Conservatory and the National Conservatory. He holds the titles of Federal Master and FIDE Master in chess. Pioneer of «Shareholder Activism» in our country, which he introduced to the Greek Capital Market in 2004. He has strived hard for the effective implementation of Corporate Governance by listed companies and many of his proposals have been submitted to the supervisory authorities, after elaboration by the Board of SED and have been incorporated in both the Corporate Governance Law and the Greek Corporate Governance Code. He is the initiator of the «Investment & Stock Exchange Conference», which has been organized with great success by SED, continuously since 2002. He is also the initiator of the «Investment Education & Training Programme», which he presented for the first time in 2013, at the 11th Conference of the SED under the name «Monitoring Programme General Meetings of Listed Companies». Its implementation began in 2015, in collaboration with the Athens Stock Exchange and many universities of Greece and Cyprus. Spyros Martsekis is the founder and the Managing Partner of Ionian Capital. He is also a senior advisor to Pelican Point International Group in California. Before founding Ionian Capital, he was a Managing Director at Alvarez & Marsal and a founding member of the European Shipping Advisory Practice. Prior to that he held senior managerial roles at KPMG and HSBC in London. He also worked at Morgan Stanley for 6 years. He holds a bachelor from the Athens University of Economics & Finance and holds an MBA from Columbia University on an Onassis Foundation scholarship. Yiannis Ritsios, CFA holder, is an experienced investment professional with over 25 years of experience in Greece and Luxembourg. He is the Head of Pension Fund Portfolio Investments at EUROBANK Asset Management MFMC, where he manages and oversees Global Multi-Asset Mandates. Prior to this role, Yiannis was the Head of Discretionary Asset Management at NBG Asset Management MFMC and also Managing Director and Board Member at NBG Asset Management Luxembourg. Yiannis has extensive experience across a range of asset classes, including Multi-Assets, Equities, Fixed Income, and Alternative Investments. He specializes in managing portfolios for institutional clients such as pension funds, insurance companies, and endowments. He holds an MBA from Imperial College Business School, an MSc in Telecommunications and Signal Processing from Imperial College, and a Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Additionally, Yiannis is a CFA Charterholder. In academia, he has served as a part-time professor in the MSc in Finance at ALBA Business School, as well as in the MBA and MSc in Finance programs at the American College of Greece (Deree). He has also taught CFA preparatory courses across Greece, Europe, and the Middle East. Yiannis is a founding member of CFA Society Greece, where he served as President and Board Member for more than 15 years, while he remains an active volunteer with CFA Institute and the CFA Program. A collaboration exists between the LCFM and the Finance Club Unipi since the establishment of the latter. The Finance Club Unipi (FCU) was established in February 2019 by a team of students of the Department of Banking and Financial Management who won the CFA Research Challenge competition in the same year. The FCU is staffed every year on a voluntary basis by students and graduates of the University of Piraeus and it is composed of three departments: a) The Corporate, b) The Financial Markets and c) The Marketing and Career Development. The primary mission of the FCU is to bridge the distance that exists between the job market in the Finance sector and the academic community and to assist the students to obtain the necessary skills and knowledge required for a successful professional career. The LCFM can collaborate with the FCU in composing and mentoring a team of students of the Department of Banking and Financial Management for the Annual CFA Research Challenge competition, as well as assigning teamwork projects to member students of the Club in collaboration with the other members of the LCFM aiming to present the results of these projects both to the academic community and the market. Also, the FCU may assist the LCFM in organizing conferences in the University.
