The 6th Biennial Hellenic Observatory PhD Symposium
on Contemporary Greece & Cyprus

Call for Papers

We invite submissions for the 6th Biennial Hellenic Observatory PhD Symposium on Contemporary Greece and Cyprus. A main objective of the Symposium is to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and ideas between young scholars currently undertaking research on Greece and Cyprus. The Symposium is intended to help graduate research students to overcome the academic isolation associated to PhD research, to ‘try’ their ideas and findings on wider audiences, and to establish new collaborative links across disciplines. Researchers will also be able to ‘engage’ with a wider academic community, including academic members of staff at the LSE, and also a number of other distinguished scholars who will act as keynote speakers and discussants to the Symposium.

We welcome contributions from research students (current and recent) across any field of the Social Sciences and Humanities whose PhD focuses on contemporary Greece and Cyprus.

The topics covered in the Symposium include, but are not limited to:

  •          Media and Public Perceptions
  •          Foreign Policy
  •         Public Policy (including welfare, education, and social policies)
  •          Economic Policy (including labour market, industrial, and regional policies)
  •          Economic Problems and Performance (including macro/micro economics and finance)
  •          Greece and Southeast Europe (including economic and political cooperation and energy)
  •          Domestic and EU Politics
  •          Migration and Minorities
  •          History and Culture
  •          State and Society

Abstracts of 500 words maximum are to be included in the relevant section of the ‘Abstract Submission Form’ which must be completed in full and be submitted by email to Hellenicobservatory.phd@lse.ac.uk. The subject matter of the e-mail submission should read PhD Symposium Abstract. Abstracts should indicate the academic significance of the topic, relevance of conceptual literature, and analytical structure.
